Derek sat at his desk staring dully at his computer. It was eight a.m. Only four hours left to find a murderer. The vision from last night had been seared in his memory cells. What the fuck do I do now? If the image turned out to be true, then the obvious leap was to believe Titus was responsible for the three murders. But what if it wasn’t true? What if his gift had finally misfired? He was grasping at straws, but straws were all he had.

“Stone, get in here,” Lieutenant Gray’s voice shook him from his thoughts.

He stood and walked into the commander’s office, wondering what misstep of his had once again pissed the man off. “What can I do for you?”

Gray sat behind his desk with an open folder in front of him. “Always a smartass, hey, Stone?”

“Sir?”

“Take a seat, Detective.”

He sat down.

Gray closed the file on his desk and looked him straight in the eyes. “I’ve talked to the assistant D.A. He’s not ready to go for an arrest with what we have, but I think your intuition is on the money. You and your partner get to Love Ink. Question the bastard again. Find me something that will stick so we can get that warrant.”

Derek couldn’t bear the thought of Titus behind bars. In his heart, he believed him innocent, no matter what his mother’s curse had shown him. Taking an oath to uphold the law was something he’d taken very seriously when he’d become a police officer. The vow had been the one constant in his life. No matter what, he’d always abided by it. But how could he do that now? Even though he didn’t really believe in love, he definitely felt something for Titus, something strong and powerful. Call it caring, infatuation, lust—its name didn’t matter, only saving the man who’d given him hope to live again did.

He put his hand up to his chest where the ink that Titus had given him resided underneath his shirt. Unlike the victims’ tats he’d felt, this one was completely closed to him, to his gift. It seemed like an ordinary piece of skin art, but its power had worked back at Love Ink. He’d surrendered to its sway which led him to be intimate with Titus. Perhaps since it was on his flesh, the spell was masked, hidden from him and his mother’s curse.

Please let the magic hold.

“Commander, I’ve already been to Love Ink twice to question Mr. Love. He’s squeaky clean,” he lied, thanking the heavens for the magic of Titus’s tat.

“Are you getting cold feet on this one, Stone?”

“No. I think we need to talk to Barnes’s nephew.”

“Explain to me how the nephew of Samuel Barnes...” Gray looked down at the open folder in front of him. He turned a few pages, read something, and then looked back at him. “A Mr. Kyle Pippins has any connection to Paul Crane?”

His mind riffled through every memorized fact of the case in the hopes of drawing any line of logic to get the commander off of Titus’s scent.
